Pride the killer of relationships.

When we talk about pride we don’t necessarily think that we are prideful. Sure, we can be proud about an accomplishment, that we worked hard for or accomplishments done by our children. Some of us are just proud to be an American! My children are my pride and joy! Nothing wrong with that as long as we’re not finding our identity in that!

There’s another type of pride, I’m speaking of, that can literally kill, steal and destroy our lives and our relationships, if we allow it to.
It’s the pride that keeps us from humility and humbling ourselves before God. It keeps us from admitting we’re wrong. It keeps us from truth or seeking help. This pride keeps us from being sincere with others and fuels our jealousy of their success. This pride keeps us bound by shame. This pride keeps us self-centered and looking out for our own interest. This pride robs us of peace and joy.

Some synonyms for pride are: arrogance, vanity, self-importance, self-conceit, self-love, self-glorification, self-adulation, self-admiration, narcissism, egotism, presumption, haughty, snobbishness, and so on!
Do you feel like you fit into any of those categories? Maybe you’re great with self-pity!? Yes, self-pity is rooted in pride! I know, I was the queen of self-pity! Self-pity gets you the attention of others, self-pity shows how “rough you have it” and plays off the heart strings of friends and acquaintances. Self-pity abuses relationships. Think about some of the friends, you’ve had, that are no longer part of your life? Why are they gone? Self-pity always takes and seldom gives. Once again pride has killed a relationship.

Then there’s the evil of pride that keeps us from ever admitting we’re wrong. This pride kills marriages, families, friendships and so much more.
Pride is the opposite of humility.
Here’s what the word says about pride…
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭16:18‬
I love how the Passion Translation says it..“Your boast becomes a prophecy of a future failure. The higher you lift up yourself in pride, the harder you’ll fall in disgrace.”Proverbs‬ ‭16:18‬ ‭TPT‬‬
Wow! What a warning!
Is there strife in your life with your spouse, family members, friends or a coworker?
“Where there is strife, there is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.”Proverbs‬ ‭13:10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Do you need to stop and take advice? Do you need to set aside the notion of having to be right, even if you are right? Maybe you need to apologize and admit you’re wrong? The biggest lie people with pride believe, is they’ll loose ground in that relationship, loss of respect or be looked at differently by admitting they were wrong, or that they needed help. What will others think? Who cares what others think? You should only be concerned with what God thinks!

Pride can keep us from being right with God. Yes, it is a sin and if we’re living opposite of the truth of God’s word we’re only hurting ourselves and deceiving others around us from hearing and knowing the truth, which can set them free!
If you want a relationship to thrive you’ve got to be humble.
“A man’s pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.”
‭‭PROVERBS‬ ‭29:23‬ ‭NASB‬‬
“He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭25:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I believe God will honor us when we do not engaged in the prideful strife and arrogant ways but we the take time to humble ourselves and pray, then trust Him to take care of everything!
“He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.”
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭25:9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Humbled daily before God in prayer and inviting the Holy Spirit in, brings pride to its knees.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.”‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5:6‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Let’s set aside the pride and go from
self-confidence to God-confidence!
